What is an ayanamsha?

An ayanamsha is the angular difference used to relate the tropical zodiac to a sidereal zodiac. Because of the gradual precession of the equinoxes, the tropical reference point and the star-based reference used by sidereal systems no longer align. Subtracting an ayanamsha from a tropical longitude produces the corresponding sidereal position.

What does Lahiri mean?

Lahiri ayanamsha, also called Chitrapaksha ayanamsha, is one of the most widely used standards in Indian astrology. It defines a particular reference for the sidereal zodiac. Other ayanamshas use slightly different reference points, so a planet close to a sign or nakshatra boundary may appear differently across calculators.

Astro Pragya uses Lahiri ayanamsha consistently with Swiss Ephemeris calculations. Stating the methodology makes results easier to compare and avoids mixing placements calculated under different standards.

Why your Vedic and Western signs may differ

A tropical chart anchors the zodiac to the seasonal equinox, while a sidereal chart applies an ayanamsha to align the zodiac with a stellar reference. The offset is large enough that many planets move into the previous sign in a sidereal chart. Neither label alone explains a full reading; the interpretation must follow the calculation system used for that chart.

Common questions

Questions, answered

Is Lahiri the only ayanamsha?

No. Lahiri is widely used, but alternatives such as Raman and Krishnamurti use different reference definitions.

Does ayanamsha affect the ascendant?

Yes. Applying a different ayanamsha can change sidereal degrees and, near a boundary, may change a sign or nakshatra.

Which ayanamsha does Astro Pragya use?

Astro Pragya uses Lahiri ayanamsha consistently for its sidereal Vedic chart calculations.
