What is Vimshottari dasha?

Vimshottari dasha is a widely used Vedic astrology timing system. It divides a 120-year cycle among nine planetary rulers: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury. The sequence is fixed, but the starting point and remaining balance at birth depend on the Moon’s nakshatra position.

A Mahadasha is the major planetary period. Each Mahadasha is divided into Antardashas, or sub-periods, creating a more detailed timeline. These periods do not work as isolated predictions; astrologers interpret them alongside the planet’s sign, house, strength, rulership, and relationships in the birth chart.

What the calculator needs

Enter an accurate birth date, time, and place. The calculator first determines the Moon’s sidereal longitude and nakshatra, then calculates the dasha balance at birth and the periods that follow. Accurate input is important because a Moon near a nakshatra boundary can change the starting ruler.

How to read your dasha timeline

Begin with the current Mahadasha ruler and locate that planet in the natal chart. Then add the Antardasha ruler as a second layer. Themes associated with both planets may become more prominent, but outcomes depend on the whole chart and real-life circumstances. Use the timeline to reflect on cycles and priorities rather than as a guarantee of specific events.

Common questions

Questions, answered

How is the first Mahadasha calculated?

It is based on the Moon’s birth nakshatra and how far the Moon had progressed through that nakshatra at birth.

How long is the full Vimshottari cycle?

The complete sequence totals 120 years, with a different duration assigned to each planetary ruler.

Does a dasha guarantee an event?

No. A dasha supplies timing context and must be interpreted with the full birth chart and the person’s circumstances.
